Coaching is as old as recorded history. It involves a warm, friendly and
confidential relationship between you and a helping professional, or mentor.
The purpose of this relationship is to help you solve problems. It is brief,
action-oriented and goal-focused. Psychologists are naturally suited to
coaching as they are formally trained in active listening skills and
experienced in helping people. Together, usually by telephone, you and your
coach will find and implement solutions to any of your interpersonal,
educational or work-related problems. Coaching is for mentally healthy
individuals and is not used to treat mental illness. It is not psychotherapy
and does not require delving into your past or reopening old wounds.
