Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Concerns |
||
People in sexual minorities have special needs and concerns which require an experienced, intelligent, accepting, non-heterosexist perspective in a therapist. Issues such as discovering whether or not one is gay, coming out, parenting, forming intimate sexual and romantic relationships, being gay and married and developing social support systems need to be discussed non-judgementally with an approach we refer to as "gay-affirmative."
Chesapeake Psychological Services and The Coaching-Center do not believe in or engage in "change therapy." We recognize the damage that both societal and internalized homophobia can wreak on the mind and soul and affirm that every person should be able to have the best life within their reach. We recognize that homosexuality and bisexuality are points on the continuum of human sexual and romantic expression and are just as valid as heterosexuality. We condemn discrimination based on sexual orientation, including hate crimes perpetrated against sexual minorities and we support all efforts to eliminate homophobia and heterosexism and to ameliorate the damaging effects of those conditions in society. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered individuals who seek counseling at Chesapeake Psychological Services will not have to educate their therapist about their lifestyle and they will not be pathologized for being "different." Rather, they will feel comfort, trust and confidence in their potential for being helped. For more information or help, contact Dr. Morgen. |
